Adult Christian Education Series: “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man”

A new opportunity for adult Christian Education will begin Sunday, January 16, following worship. We’ll engage in a weekly video series called “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man” and is described as “a safe place to have the uncomfortable conversations about race that many White people have never been able to have”. A discussion will be facilitated by Joanne Boyd. The video series is produced and hosted by Emmanuel Acho who is an author, a Fox Sports Analyst and television personality and a former NFL linebacker. He holds a master’s degree in Sports Psychology from the University of Texas. The first video is about 10 minutes long and serves as an introduction for the series, but also raises a number of hot-button topics that will lend themselves to deeper discussion. We will plan to watch the video together on Sundays, but the link is included here if you would like to view it ahead of time. The class will begin at 11:00 am, and you can join in person or by Zoom; the Zoom link will be sent out with the worship notes later this week. The zoom link for the class is separate from the worship link, so if you are viewing worship on Zoom, and wish to participate in the class, you will need to “leave” worship to “join” the class. Any questions can be directed to Denise Lewis.

The Community Service team once again invites you to join us in collecting cans of soup for “Souper Bowl” Sunday. The big event is Sunday February 13. We will be collecting soup on January 30, February 6 and Feb 13 to be donated to our local food shelf. You are invited to participate in a bracket tournament – one entry per can of soup. There will be prizes! Stay tuned for more details!

From Community Service: During the winter months, the donations to the Little Free Food Pantry need to be modified to tolerate the extreme cold temperatures we can see here. Please review the attached list of items for what to consider donating; ideal items are dried and in bags, like dried beans, rice, oatmeal, cereal, etc. And remember the motto of the Little Free Food Pantry movement: Take what you need, leave what you can.

Spirit of Life is working to be sustainable through recycling. By introducing more recycling collocated at the location of most trash cans, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste being sent to the landfill while showcasing that reducing waste can be easy. Help us to celebrate sustainability while enjoying the event. Clean plastics, tin/metal and paper should go into the recycling bins and everything else should go into the trash. Thank you! Please see Pastor Rob, any Elder or member of the staff with questions.

Volunteers Needed:
…We need one person each Sunday to serve as a Greeter and one person each Sunday to serve as an Usher for Sunday worship. We need two volunteers for each week. Please let Becky Brandt know what dates you are available to help and she will build a calendar. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE A NEW ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SERIES STARTING ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 16 (delayed due to technical difficulties).

Starting weekly, following worship on January 16, there will be a Christian Education series focused on questions and issues of race. You can meet in person in the conference room, or join on Zoom, using the Owl technology that has worked so well for previous group meetings. The class will start with a 15-minute video, followed by our own discussion of the content of the video. Joanne Boyd has agreed to facilitate our discussions; Joanne has years of experience leading workshops and classes on how to identify racial bias, and she has many of her own resources and experiences to draw upon. Several members of Spirit of Life participated in the Anti-Racism Spiritual Pilgrimage created by the Presbytery. A small group of those participants has continued to meet, to keep the discussions going. A new committee is forming, focused on social justice issues, and this educational offering is part of the committee’s mission. The class is open to everyone interested in engaging in difficult conversations about race. If you’d like to join the committee; we meet (on Zoom) the first Thursday of every month. If you would like to be included on the email list for this committee, please contact Denise Lewis. Please watch for more details coming next week.
